In a news release Tuesday, Best Lighting Products and Lithonia Lighting announced, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, a voluntary recall of emergency exit signs due to a failure to illuminate.
Approximately 450 LHQM LED Exit Signs with Emergency Lights are subject to recall due to a malfunction in that causes the emergency signage not to illuminate in the event of a power failure. The malfunction could lead to a lack of adequate lighting to direct people to an exit during an emergency.
Ten reports of illumination failure have been filed. The failures occurred during testing after the signs had been installed. No injuries related to the malfunction have been reported.
The signs affected by the recall display the word “EXIT” in green or red in the center of the sign with emergency lights attached to ether end of the fixture. The signs were sold nationwide to authorized distributors for $100 to $200 from January 2011 through May 2011. The signs are typically installed in commercial buildings.
The affected model numbers are LHQM LED G M6, LHQM LED R M6 and LHQM LED R HO M6. The model number appears on a label inside the fixture housing and on the sign’s packaging. Dates on the packaging include dates in March, April, or May 2010.
Consumers are encouraged to contact Lithonia Lighting, and the company will replace recalled units for free.
As a Los Angeles personal injury attorney, I hope that no one was harmed during an emergency as a result of the faulty signs. I encourage businesses that have these signs installed to arrange their replacement as soon as possible in order to protect the safety of patrons and customers.
