In a news release Saturday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that Micro Bird, Inc. is recalling certain 2010 and 2011 school buses due to an electrical system issue that could prevent safety signals from operating properly, thereby posing a risk of injury to passengers boarding or dismounting the bus.
Subject to recall are 671 Mico Bird G5 and MB II school buses. The wire on the 8-way flashing power circuit is too small. The defect causes the terminal connect to overheat, which could cause the connection to overheat and fail, running the risk that the safety system will stop working. If the bus’s flashing lights are not operational, a vehicle approaching the bus may not stop while the bus is loading or unloading passengers. This poses a risk of injury or death to passengers.
The school buses affected by the recall were manufactured from October 1, 2009, through March 16, 2011. Micro Bird is expected to notify customers of the recall in September and will provide bus owners with a free updated wiring kit with a relay. If needed, Micro Bird will reimburse owners the cost of labor for having the kit installed.
I hope that no one has been injured as a result of malfunctioning safety signals. As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I encourage affected Micro Bird customers to arrange for a repair kit is soon as possible.
