A California nut sheller that was believed to be the source of an E. coli contamination has been cleared by authorities of the United Stated Food and Drug Administration, according to news sources.
Walnuts, fudge, trail mix, and almonds were all recalled by Johnvince Foods after they were linked with an E. coli outbreak. The products were processed in a Anderson and Sons Shelling plant in Vina, California.
The recall occurred in early September and many products were pulled from independent stores and large supermarket chains. No illnesses were reported in relation to any of the products.
The file currently remains open, and the investigation will continue.
The nuts were thought to be contaminated with E. coli O157: H7, a particularly deadly and resistant strain. In healthy individuals, the bacteria can cause cramps, diarrhea, kidney damage and strokes. Particularly at risk are the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.
