As school starts back up and fall sports begin, emergency room doctors are advising coaches, students and parents to play it safe, as reported in a news article.
“Emergency physicians treat sports-related injuries in emergency departments every day and some of these injuries are very serious. It’s important to make sure that children follow the rules and play it safe and wear the appropriate safety gear,” said the president of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
According to the National Center for Sports Safety, injuries children receive from sports are behind 21 percent of traumatic brain injuries among kids in the U.S. Additionally, kids ages 5 to 14 make up 40 percent of injuries treated in emergencies room related to sports.
To decrease risk of injury while on the field, follow these safety tips:
- Wear the correct safety gear, such as helmets, pads for your knees and elbows, mouth guards, and any other gear that is required for the activity.
- Make sure safety equipment is the proper size and up to date with current safety standards.
- Practice skills. Knowing how to execute certain moves in specific sports can prevent straining your muscles or an injury.
- High temperatures can cause heat exhaustion and can lead to death. Make sure players are kept properly hydrated.
