World Wide Fish Products Inc. has announced a recall of their Smoked Split Herring because the product was found to be uneviscerated during a routine inspection, according to news sources.
The product was sold on August 17, 2011 to Food Plaza Market, NSA Supermarket (Bravo), P&P Distributers, Brooklyn #1 Meat Market, and Flaming Meat Distributors, all in New York City.
The New York State Agriculture and Markets Food Inspector found that the product was uneviscerated during a routine inspection. New York State Food Laborator Personnel confirmed the finding.
Evisceration, the process of disemboweling, is required by New York State Agriculture and Markets Regulations before fish can be sold because clostridium botulinum spores occur most frequently in that area.
The company has not yet received any reports of illnesses.
Consumers are advised to return the product to their store of purchase for a full refund.
As a Los Angeles product liability lawyer, I have seen food recalls like this one and know that, with as much testing goes into food products before manufacturers send them to market, mistakes can still be made. Although our personal injury law firm does not handle these type of cases there are food recall lawyers out there that can help your or a loved one if you have been affected by a recall such as this one.
