The Food and Drug Administration has received multiple complaints of fungal endophthalmitis appearing in patients treated with Brilliant Blue G during eye surgery. Brilliant Blue G has not been approved for medical use in the United States by the FDA. The FDA requests all physicians report any infections associated with use of the Brilliant Blue G compound to the administration’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program. The product is currently under investigation by the FDA as well as the Centers for Disease Control and local and state public health agencies.
The company is currently recalling all lots of Brilliant Blue G, including but not limited to those listed above. Physicians who have purchased Brilliant Blue G are encouraged to return all lots of the product, including any unused portions, to Frank’s Compounding. Upon receipt of the items, the company will credit the physicians with a full refund.
