Numerous incidents of dogs falling ill or even dying after consuming chicken jerky treats from China has many calling for restrictions on the product.
It all began in 2007, when incidents began to come to the attention of lawmakers and regulatory agencies. In March of that year, the FDA instituted a number of recalls on dog and cat food products that were found to contain ingredients contaminated with melamine. Then in September of that year, the FDA issued warnings to pet owners about the possible safety hazards posed by chicken jerky treats.
Now, history seems to be repeating itself as the FDA issues another warning about the same issue. Reports of incidents dropped for two years, but they’re currently on the rise again. The FDA has asked pet owners to keep a close eye on their pets and watch for such things as decreased appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea.
From the time that the FDA began receiving reports, numerous tests have been run on all sorts of chicken jerky products, but at no point has there been conclusive evidence that shows a contaminant. However, there have been tests carried out in the past couple months designed to look for heavy metals, and those results have not yet come in.
It’s my hope as a San Jose personal injury lawyer that everyone out there who has fed their dog these items makes sure that their pet remains healthy. As a personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles, I would hate to see a defective product hurt man’s best friend.
