Dorel Juvenile Group, headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, has issued a voluntary recall for an estimated 900,000 Safety 1st Push ‘N Snap cabinet locks, because they can be unlocked by children, potentially allowing them access to the poisonous or otherwise hazardous items the locks are designed to protect the children from, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The commission reports receiving approximately 200 complaints from consumers regarding the locks. Children from the ages of nine months to five years have been able to disengage the lock’s safety latch in 140 recorded cases, and three children reportedly swallowed toxic cleaning fluids requiring them to receive emergency medical treatment. The Consumer Product Safety Commission instructs consumers in possession of the Safety 1st Push ‘N Snap cabinet locks to discontinue their use immediately and put all hazardous items, such as insecticides, prescription medication, and cleaning fluids, out of the reach of small children. Keep all potentially harmful products in their original packaging because this often contains useful instructions in case of accidental ingestion. Contact Dorel Juvenile Group for free replacement locks. The affected cabinet locks were manufactured between January 2004 and November 2010 and are imprinted with model numbers 48332 and 48391, visible on the back of the lock and on the lock’s packaging.
