Alfa Sprouts Incorporated, a food manufacturer headquartered in Honeoye Falls, New York, at the request of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, has announced a voluntary recall for an estimated 100 pounds of Clover Sprouts and Springwater Sprouts brand Organic Alfalfa Sprouts due to a potential contamination. The consumption of Listeria monocytogene organisms may lead to a severe or even deadly infection to individuals with weak immune systems such as children and the elderly. Consumers in good health may experience temporary symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach pain, severe headache, stiffness, or nausea. Pregnant women infected with Listeria can experience stillbirths or miscarriages. Organic Alfalfa Sprouts sold in 4 ounce clam shell packages imprinted with a sell by date of April 28, 2012. These products are stamped with universal price codes 688267047411 and 042891000523. Clover Sprouts sold in bulk containers imprinted with a production code of P93 are also affected by this recall. The potential Listeria contamination was found during testing by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Microbiological Data Program and the New York State Food Laboratory. Consumers affected by this recall can return these products to the manufacturer for a full refund.
