The California county of Humboldt is encouraging its young citizens to participate in a public safety awareness campaign designed to make the roads less dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians. An estimated 700 pedestrians and cyclists were killed in collisions on California roads in 2012, and the campaign, produced by the Humboldt County Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program, a subsidiary of the Public Health Branch of the Department of Health and Human Services. Humboldt County citizens between the ages of 12 and 26 are invited to compete in a contest to create multimedia promotional material for the pedestrian and bicycle safety initiative in the form of a 30 second TV or radio advertisement that includes an original slogan and logo. Suggested themes for the commercials include the importance of wearing a securely fitted helmet when riding a bicycle to prevent brain injury and paying attention to traffic signals when crossing the street, and the responsibility drivers have to keep a look out for pedestrians and cyclists and share the road with them. Contestants will compete in two age brackets, 12 years old to 19 years old and 20 years old to 26 years old.
