If you keep tabs on recall information provided by the Food and Drug Administration, then you’ve likely heard about the recent recall of River Ranch bagged salad products. Well, because those recalled items were used by foodservice establishments as an ingredient, it should come as no surprise that a subsequent recall has been issued.
The Portland, Oregon-based Pacific Coast Fruit Company announced the recall of a variety of bagged salad products that had used the recalled River Ranch items as a component. The affected items were distributed throughout Washington, Alaska, Oregon, and Idaho at Evergreen, Fred Meyer, and Avanti retail outlets.
As with the River Ranch recall, the products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This organism is especially dangerous and possibly even fatal in the young, the elderly, and those whose immune systems have been weakened, but even relatively healthy people could experience vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and more.
The products recalled at the retail level were the 10 ounce Deluxe Salad with Ranch Dressing, as well as the same product but with Balsamic and 1000 Island dressings. The regular 9.6 ounce garden salad was also recalled. Each of the products came in a clamshell package. There were also a variety of products sold as VA food service kits that had to be recalled.
Thankfully, there have yet to be illnesses reported in conjunction with the items contained within the recall. Consumers are being advised to destroy or return the product.
