The manufacturer Van Hool N.V. has issued a recall of specific models of motorcoach of the 2010 through 2012 model years. The vehicles that fall within the recall’s purview are the C2045, the T2145, the T2140, and the TD925. Each of the vehicles in question came with Meritor Wabco Electronic Stability Control Modules that were built between August 2005 and September 2011. Only 17 vehicles suffer from the potential safety defect which necessitated the recall.
The source of the recall, which is set to begin at the end of June of this year, is the possible malfunction of the aforementioned electronic stability component. Van Hool has stated that the module has been shown to incorrectly function in certain travel conditions influenced by the incline of the road, the roll of the vehicle body, and various other factors that may come into play.
The malfunction has the potential to lead to serious accidents, as the electronic stability control could theoretically kick in when it isn’t in fact needed. It does this because of a false perception by the computer that the driver has oversteered. When the system kicks in, the driver can suddenly have their brakes unwillingly applied, compromising safe driving performance.
The dealer of the vehicles, ABC Bus, will act as a liaison for Van Hool to notify those customers whose motorcoachers may suffer from the defect. When notified, such persons will be able to bring their vehicles in to get a free component replacement.
