Millions of units of an item are being recalled because of the danger that the product could potentially pose to consumers.
The recall was announced by the New Hudson, Michigan-based Flushmate and concerns their Series 503 Flushmate III Pressure-Assist Flushing System. The product, which was made between 1997 and 2008, can be found inside of toilet tanks. These items will have a serial number on their topside which begins with a range of numerals from 101497 to 022908. Anything between these numbers falls within the purview of the recall, totaling 2,330,600 units in America and another 9,400 in Canada.
These items have a vessel weld seam that is designed to release the pressure that can build up inside the unit. Unfortunately, this seam can burst, sending the lid of the tank shooting off the toilet. The lid itself could then hit someone, or else it could fall and shatter, at which point anyone in the vicinity could be cut by the sharp pieces left over.
Sadly, 304 instances of the product bursting have taken place, and 14 of those resulted in a consumer sustaining injuries. Property damage also occurred.
These items were sold to toilet manufacturers to install in their units, but they could also have been purchased at Lowe’s and the Home Depot for around $108. Anyone with the item in their possession should cut their toilet’s water supply and contact the firm to get a repair kit at no charge.
