In response to a request from the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Kia Motors Corporation has issued a voluntary recall for more than 20,000 Kia Borrego passenger vehicles, due to a safety issue related to the vehicle’s service brakes, hydraulic pedals, and linkages. The model year 2009 Kia Borrego passenger vehicles affected by this recall were manufactured between May of 2008 and January of 2009, and they have been equipped with non-adjustable brake pedals. The pedal mounts on certain models may be made from fiberglass that can fracture in the event of an automobile collision. If the original impact of the traffic accident does not stop the vehicle, it may then continue rolling, unimpeded by the brake pedal, requiring the driver to either apply the emergency brake or run the risk of a second collision, increasing the likelihood that an injury will occur as a result of the accident. Kia Motors Corporation has announced plans to begin notifying owners of affected vehicles of this potential safety hazard in the near future. Consumers in possession of the model year 2009 Borrego passenger vehicles included in this recall, may return them to an authorized Kia dealership, where the potentially defective fiberglass brake pedal mounts will be replaced at no additional cost. More information on this recall can be obtained by contacting Kia’s customer support center and referencing recall campaign number SC096.
