A drug firm whose products made bold claims that couldn’t be backed up with fact has had its products seized.
The seizure was conducted on May 31 by the United States Marshals Service against the Portland, Maine-based Global Biotechnologies. The Food and Drug Administration requested this action, and a warrant pushed it forward. The company makes a variety of drugs, including Immunol, Healthy Trac, Glucanol, and Lactopril.
Global Biotechnologies had receive a warning letter from the FDA accusing them of placing certain unproven claims on their products’ labels regarding the treatments of diseases. This means that the drugs would be classified by the safety organization as misbranded and unapproved new drugs under the guidelines of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Specifically, the FDA has accused the company of saying that their drugs can diagnose, mitigate, and cure diseases. They have said that these false claims were made across multiple media, including in various promotional materials and on the web.
The company vowed to change their labels, but this proved not to be the case once an inspection was initiated by the FDA. Inspectors discovered that the claims were still being made and the complaint that brought about the seizure was thus initiated.
Thankfully, no one has reported becoming ill as a result of any of the drugs produced by Global Biotechnologies.
