A number of buses are being recalled due to an issue that people who follow recall news regularly might be familiar with.
The recall was announced by Daimler Trucks North America and concerns their Thomas Built Minotour, Saf-T-Liner EF, Saf-T-Liner C2, and Saf-T-Liner HDX of model years between 2010 and 2013. Each of the buses in question was produced between April 5 of last year and April 23 of this year. A total of 163 buses fall within the purview of the recall.
At issue is a potential defect with the Prolo roof escape hatches installed on these units. Friction between the nylon pop-up support and the rear plate assemblies is heightened, which brings the vehicles out of compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that governs emergency exits. The opening force of the hatch is greater than what is acceptable under that standard. Should an emergency situation such as a fire present itself, people are at greater risk of injury because their ability to escape through this hatch might be compromised.
Owners can expect to receive a notification from Thomas Built. This should take place by August 24. At that time, individuals and dealers will be able to obtain a free service kit from Specialty Manufacturing.
