Alberta’s distracted driver law was intended to punish irresponsible and unsafe drivers engaged in behavior such as using a cell phone or texting, putting on makeup, or reading a book while driving. The author of a new editorial laments, however, that it has also outlawed some driving traditions on the farm. She explains that she learned to drive by sitting on the lap of her father as they crept at a snail’s pace around the farm—a tradition now made illegal by the distracted driving law that prohibits lap riding.
