Chicago’s Department of Transportation has just put into action the initial steps of the city’s first ever pedestrian safety plan. These preliminary measures began with the installation of so-called continental crosswalks, which involve the placement of rungs made of reflective materials that are more easily identifiable to motorists. 100 or so have been installed this year, but that’s far from the end of the line in terms of safety measures. In the coming months and years, the city expects to install pedestrian islands, better crossing signals, and bump-outs in suburban areas.
