Many people, it seems, text while driving, even though they know that it is quite dangerous. A new study out of the University of Michigan shows that people naturally feel compelled to check and create text messages despite understanding the dangers of doing so while driving. People may not even realize how automatic the action is, which presents challenges to campaigns designed to educate the public about the dangers. If people don’t realize that they have these compulsions, campaign efforts might have less influence on safety than common sense suggests.
