Merced is the latest city in California to attempt to become more friendly to cyclists in the area. Bicycle infrastructure has been an integral part of planning ever since 2009, when the Bicycle Advisory Commission was formed by the Merced Bicycle Coalition. The newest initiative finds officials working out a plan to design bike lanes that can be installed across ten miles of streets in the downtown and southern areas of the city. Traffic light sensors, sharrows, and numerous bike lane improvements have been the focus of previous bike safety efforts in Merced.
