Dueling lawsuits have been filed following a disputed car “accident” in the city of Galveston, Texas that was caught on video by a passerby.
The video depicts a 2006 Bugatti Veyron driving down the road and then straight into a lagoon without any sign of the brakes being pressed. The Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Company points to the video as evidence that the man purposely piloted into the water so that he could collect on a $2.2 million insurance policy he had taken out less than a month before the incident.
The man disputes this claim, offering up his own version of events. He says that his phone fell to the floor, causing him to look down. When his eyes came back up to the road, he alleges that a pelican was in the vehicle’s way. To avoid taking the pelican’s life, the man drove the rare automobile into the water.
Philadelphia has sued the man, but the man countered by filing his own lawsuit against the insurance company. Also working against the man, though, is the fact that Philadelphia says they have spoken to a person who claims they were asked by the driver to steal the car and then light it on fire.
