The North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition recently conducted a survey which attempted to outline the danger posed to children by magnetic balls typically sold as toy sets. 354 pediatric gastroenterologists were queried, and it was determined that 480 ingestion incidents have thus far taken place, with 204 of those occurring in the last year alone. A whopping 80% of incidents between 2008 and 2012 entailed surgery, and just over half of all swallowing incidents occurred among the under-six demographic.
