An op-ed piece in the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan advocates for local South Dakota laws against texting while driving. Texting while driving is unnecessary and clearly dangerous, increasing the chance of an accident by 23 times. 39 states have already passed such a law, and while enforcement might be difficult, it would send a strong message to drivers that the behavior is wrong and dangerous. Since action at the state level appears to be slow and unreliable, local government is being asked to take it upon themselves to pass such bans following the well-publicized example of Sioux Falls.
