In Washoe County, Nevada, pedestrian fatalities are on the rise. Just three people on foot died in 2010, but that number increased by 400% to 12 deaths the next year. Thus far in 2012, six such fatalities have been recorded. To cut down on these numbers, the Office of Traffic Safety is implementing a program called Street Smart. Although last year’s initiative was directed toward what pedestrians can do to encourage safety, this year’s effort targets drivers. The program manager said that proper lighting can go a long way toward improving safety.
