An initiative being put forth in Reno, Nevada aims to promote pedestrian safety throughout the area.
The effort is made possible through a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety branch of the state’s Department of Public Safety. The program, called “Look Up, Unplug, Stay Safe,” will find University Police Services at the University of Nevada-Reno and the Davidson Academy partnering to make sure pedestrians understand the importance of obeying the rules of the road.
Earlier this year, middle school and high school students at the Davidson Academy were able to get 650 people to pledge to remain safe while on campus. The bestowal of an $18,000 grant will expand the current pledge efforts, allow for an increase in enforcement efforts around campus, and help improve education about the dangers of distracted walking and other hazardous activities. People in the area will be taught to heed the suggestions of traffic signals and to refrain from distractions stemming from mobile devices to prevent a pedestrian accident.
In addition, a variety of other tips are offered to pedestrians. Persons on foot should only text when they are stopped in a safe place, and headphones should not be used while walking. Finally, any pedestrian needs to verify that they have been seen. You can do so by locking eyes with an approaching driver.
