The threat of a fire hazard has become apparent once again, this time in conjunction with a series of generators, something particularly disheartening considering that many people along the Eastern Seaboard might have used such generators following the recent Sandy disaster.
The Kearney, Nebraska-based Pramac America announced the recall, which pertains to Powermate Sx 5500 portable generators with a model number of PM0125500. Affected serial numbers will begin with K003 through K090, adding up to a total of 7,700 generators that might suffer from the defect. Each of these products was only sold at the Home Depot. They cost around $550 when they were available for purchase between February and August of this year.
A gas leak can occur because of a defect in the generator’s fuel filter. This would create a fire threat, especially should an ignition source be in the vicinity of the leaking fuel. No such fire or injury has thus far been reported, but there have been 51 leak reports filed. Because of the apparent threat, owners are being advised to refrain from usage until such time that they can obtain free replacement components from Pramac along with a kit that can be used to fix the issue.
Consumers should get this taken care of right away. You never know when your electricity might be compromised and you’ll need to get power in some other way. Take care of it now to protect yourself later.
