In Anne Arundel County, Maryland, county police are in the midst of an initiative known as Under the Thirty-Five to Save Lives. Officers in the area will take to dangerous roadways for half an hour every shift to target those behaviors deemed most detrimental to highway safety, hence the “thirty-five” moniker bestowed upon the program. Those dangerous driving habits are speeding, aggressive driving, impaired driving, distraction, and engaging in activities that endanger pedestrians. The operation begins on the heels of four pedestrian fatalities which occurred in the past six weeks alone throughout the county. The State Police also handled three such fatal accidents over that same timeframe.
