New rules regarding sunscreens are set to go into effect beginning today. The rules, which were passed by the Food and Drug Administration, were supposed to take effect way back in June, but the compliance deadline was extended so that companies could have more time to alter their labeling accordingly. Under the new measure, sunscreens that fail to offer broad spectrum protection will not be allowed to make claims related to the prevention of skin aging or skin cancer, only sun burn. An SPF of 15 will be required to make anti-skin cancer claims. New procedures have also been instated that are meant to ensure that broad spectrum protection testing is sufficient.
