Yesterday found the Citizens Bicycle Safety Committee of Newport Beach meeting to decide how best to spend $300,000 earmarked for cycling safety improvements throughout the city. A list of 15 potential projects was compiled with the assistance of officials and members of the public. Some have voiced their support for better bike routes leading to and from a local high school, while others touted the importance of education efforts that can instill safety in the minds of everyone who is privy to the message. The City Council also plans to pursue a bike master plan to further ensure safety in the area. Such a plan would involve the installations of sharrows and other infrastructure measures that could cut down on injuries and fatalities.
