The Executive Director for an organization known as the Center for Science in the Public Interest believes that the time has come for the Food and Drug Administration to issue new rules in regards to the Nutrition Facts label affixed to food items. 20 years ago, the label was created thanks to the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act, but since that time, advances in science have increased our understanding of what is nutritious and what could be potentially detrimental to health. The writer believes that labels should be made less confusing by placing greater emphasis on calorie content and refined sugars. And instead of the presence of total fat, consumers should be enlightened as to the levels of trans fats and saturated fats. A nutritional rating system could also be implemented.
