South Dakota may have failed in its bid to ban texting and driving among all drivers, but there are other steps that lawmakers have taken to address traffic safety issues. Yesterday, the state’s Governor affixed his signature to a law that makes it illegal for teenagers who have yet to get their unrestricted license to use their cellphones in any regard behind the wheel. This law joins other distracted driving legislation at the local level throughout the state. Sioux Falls, for instance, bans texting among all drivers, although efforts to root out the behavior have been largely ineffective in the half year since the law has been implemented. A news station talked to teenagers about the new measure, and they echoed the sentiment that texting and driving legislation is a good idea.
