In November 2010, 67,500 freezers were recalled by the New York City-based Haier America because they posed a fire threat. Two and a half years onward, the company is recalling an additional 41,000 Black & Decker and Haier chest freezers. The recall stems from a potentially faulty capacitor inside the circuitry of the freezer. Overheating can occur in this component, which can lead to the aforementioned fire risk. At the time of the first recall, 18 incident reports had been filed, but that number has jumped to 45 in the ensuing timeframe. No one has reportedly been hurt thus far, but there has been property damage. Consumers should check the full announcement to see if their particular unit is affected. The freezers should be unplugged, at which point Haier can be contacted to receive a free repair appointment.
