The Food and Drug Administration wants to hear what the public thinks about proposed changes to the labeling of flavored milk products. The National Milk Producers Federation and the International Dairy Foods Association want to get the labels changed so that products like chocolate milk don’t contain the type of statements that discourage children from consuming the products. Those statements? Things like “no sugar added” or “reduced calorie.” It all has to do with the product’s standard of identity. Milk products that use a sugar substitute are required to use those aforementioned monikers under current law. The ingredients would still be found on the label. The thought is that this move would promote healthy eating among kids.
