This past Saturday found the East Hampton Ocean Rescue Squad providing safety advice to Cold Water Boot Camp attendees, and although the information hails from the other side of the country, it’s just as pertinent to paddle sport participants and boaters here in California. The Coast Guard advises that life vests be worn at all times when someone goes out on the water, and when the weather is cold, citizens must recognize the dangers of hypothermia. It’s possible to cut down on the threat by putting on clothing that holds in warmth and staves off moisture and cold. Persons should also have a plan they can put in place in the event that they fall out of a boat or a kayak because of a rogue wave.
