Three years ago, the timeframe between October and September claimed the lives of 1,000 motorists around the state of California, according to the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System of the California Highway Patrol. 78,000 more were injured. To help cut down on those numbers, the CHP is offering a series of safety tips that all motorists should heed this summer and beyond, especially if they travel through the desert.
If you’re going to be headed out on a road trip, you’ll want to bring the automobile in to a mechanic prior to leaving so that you can verify that it’s roadworthy. You can do this yourself if you know what to look out for. The radiator should be in optimum condition and your air conditioning should cool you adequately, especially as you travel through the desert. Fluids need to be topped off and tire pressure should meet the recommendations suggested by the owner’s manual.
Also important when you travel through the desert is having adequate supplies if your vehicle gives out in the midst of heat. Water and food are essential, as is sunscreen for when the sun beats down. A map should be on hand along with a cellphone in case you need to seek rescue assistance.
Finally, take those precautions you should take whenever you drive. Wear your seatbelt, maintain a safe speed, and let no alcohol pass your lips or cellphone meet your ear.
