Data recently brought to light has led the Food and Drug Administration to issue a warning about Hydroxyethyl Starch Solutions. The product, which is designed to increase plasma in persons suffering from hypovolemia, could reportedly create adverse circumstances if the recipient is an adult who is critically ill. Specifically, such persons could sustain renal impairment and even be fatally injured. Persons in the midst of open heart surgery could also apparently sustain increased bleeding. The FDA is thus warning doctors to stay clear of using the product with critically ill patients and those undergoing the aforementioned surgery. A new Boxed Warning will be created enlightening healthcare professionals to the newly revealed risks.
