Prompted by a recent injury in Santa Fe, a new article out of New Mexico seeks to raise awareness about the importance of bicycle safety. The report points out that American cyclists are far more susceptible to injury than are cyclists in other regions. Estimates peg the chances of a fatality at three times as high as the risk in Germany and six times as the risk in the Netherlands. Although it’s imperative that automobile operators respect the rights of cyclists and look out for their presence at all times, cyclists can do their part by acknowledging the laws of the road. In addition to riding with traffic and sticking to bike lanes when possible, riders should refrain from texting while riding, an increasingly common activity.
