Over the long Independence Day weekend, the California Highway Patrol was out in full force to crack down on intoxicated drivers that could endanger themselves and others on the roads. In the San Diego County area alone, 68 people had been arrested for a suspected offense by early Saturday morning. That’s a dramatic jump from the 37 offenders arrested last year, though it should be noted that this year’s long weekend means that enforcement was carried out over a longer period of time. Early results suggest that fatalities have also increased; y Saturday morning, one person in San Diego had been killed. Last year there were none in that same area. Statewide, the increase was from nine to 21 deaths.
