Safety advocates are angry about a recent California State Assembly committee decision to not move forward on a law that would bar used car dealers from selling recalled automobiles. The Business and Professions Committee declined to hold a vote that would have ushered the measure onto the next step, with one member of the Assembly suggesting that the Senator who introduced the bill was trying to play on emotions surrounding a tragic accident in order to push through the bill. The accident in question involved a member of the California Highway Patrol who was killed when the Lexus he was driving reportedly accelerated out of his control. At the time, the vehicle had not been under recall. Still, safety advocates point out that the law would have helped ensure the safety of used vehicles being purchased by citizens.
