Thanks to a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, this week will find officers with the Soledad Police Department taking part in two enforcement crackdowns over the course of as many days. On Thursday, officers will be frequenting those areas that have typically been susceptible to crashes related to distracted driving. Anyone caught using their cellphones will be issued a ticket that could cost the offender up to $279. Then, Friday night will find officers on the lookout for behaviors that could be indicative of intoxication at the wheel. Extra patrols will be made available for the endeavor. Although the department is unable to point to recent fatalities related to drunk driving, they are still concerned about the threat that such intoxication poses.
