The city of Hayward, California is attempting to drum up awareness about the importance of cycling safety through the usage of cleverly shaped bike racks. Whereas most racks are simple rows of metal attached to a frame, the new Foothill Boulevard racks are actually in the shape of a bike. The racks were the idea of the Cyclepath bike shop owner, who successfully pushed the city to install the safety measure. In the aforementioned area, the city has opted to install wider lanes rather than a dedicated bike lane due to a paucity of space, and sharrows will soon be installed to indicate the acceptability of a bike riding in the lane with traffic. The hope is that such measures will help drivers realize the importance of sharing the road.
