Sunday will find officers with the Long Beach Police Department cracking down on those persons whose actions could compromise the safety of motorcyclists. The enforcement effort is designed to nab both automobile operators and those on the backs of motorcyclists. The California Office of Traffic Safety provided the funds necessary to allow such an operation, in which officers will descend on those areas that typically post heightened motorcycle traffic. Of the 99 injuries incurred by motorcyclists and the six deaths of the same reported last year in Long Beach, speeding and improper turning were chiefly to blame. Officers will be on the lookout for those violations as well as instances of a driver being intoxicated at the wheel.
