Prompted by recent accidents, the National Transportation Safety Board is looking into the possible adoption of new safety standards on school buses. The NTSB will meet today to analyze what happened in two separates bus accidents from 2012 that each killed a single student and injured a handful of others. In each instance, the bus was struck by a large commercial vehicle at an intersection. Although lap seatbelts were on both buses, investigators point out that these don’t offer the same protection as what would be afforded with the addition of shoulder harnesses. A lack of such protection also leaves the kids at risk for coming into contact with unpadded surfaces, which the NTSB recommended be eliminated over ten years ago.
