Could a paper bike helmet help offset the safety risks that might spring up when citizens take part in a Bike Share program without bothering to bring a helmet along for the ride? That seems to be the hope of a group of designers from the London-based Royal College of Arts. By combining simple newspapers, an organic additive, and pigment, the designers can form a mold in the shape of a bowl through the use of a vacuum. Straps can then be affixed that would keep the helmet on a person’s head. The thought is that these types of easily recyclable helmets could be loaded into vending machines placed next to the BikeShare kiosk, and when the user is done, they could recycle the materials for a new helmet to be formed.
