In a couple of weeks, Northern California will unveil its new Bay Bridge, and ahead of that opening on September 3, officials with the bridge itself and with law enforcement organizations are already warning about the threat posed by distraction. The worry is that people are going to be looking around at the impressive sight of the bridge, but in doing, they’ll lose focus on their immediate environment. Drivers are also being told that pulling over onto the shoulder just to take photos will result in a citation being issued if caught by police. Drivers should also be cognizant of the traffic headaches that may pop up as the California Highway Patrol begins a rolling shutdown of the previous bridge and as people descend on the new bridge en masse.
