Yet one more state is making the move to ban all types of handheld cellphone usage at the wheel. At the end of last week, the governor of Illinois signed a measure that will prohibit all drivers from using their cellphones to carry on a conversation. The bill, which will be officially enacted at the beginning of next year, joins the state’s previous ban on texting while driving. Drivers can also expect to face more stringent penalties if their distracting actions lead them to cause a collision. Previously, drivers who caused an accident due to their texting would only be slapped with a traffic citation, but such drivers could now face prison time of up to three years if the accident contributes to someone’s death.
