The Food and Drug Administration is taking steps to ensure that studies designed to determine whether or not certain drugs would be safe for children are carried out in a safe and efficient manner. Thanks to Congress’s recent reauthorization of the Pediatric Research Equity Act, the FDA is now able to extend the deadline by which researchers are supposed to complete a given study if they determine that the request is being made for acceptable reasons. This may occur for a variety of reasons, such as the researchers not having enough patients to carry out an adequate study. This also gives the FDA the power to call out the companies that haven’t complied with a set deadline. In a new report, the FDA explains how they’re trying to make sure that drug safety continues to be boosted among children, something that can only be done by testing how kids would react to certain drugs.
