If your kids are some of the millions headed back to school this fall, then it’s important that you ensure safety at every turn. A new report explains how to do so with safety tips from a police officer in Milford, Delaware.
First, parents should verify the safety of their children’s route to school even if they’ve been walking for a few years. You simply never know when construction or some other type of barrier may have sprung up in the interim. If something has occurred that impedes your child’s ability to maintain a safe route, you should plot a new route and tell your child to stick to it to ensure safety.
Students should know that they’re always to use crosswalks, and if none are available, then an intersection at the very least. Automobiles should be at a dead halt before any streets are crossed and children should always face toward traffic while walking (the opposite of when they’re piloting a bike). One area where kids should absolutely never dart out into the road is between parked cars. It’s simply too hard for a driver to see a small child when doing so.
Drivers should also watch their own habits, especially when it comes to passing other vehicles. If an automobile is stopped and you can’t figure out why, it’s best to err on the side of caution and come to a stop in case that other vehicle is waiting for kids to cross the street.
