Yesterday, we related a report that showed how San Francisco safety advocates were thrilled at the prospect of being able to take advantage of a new pedestrian safety grant from the Department of Transportation. Although such moves are seen by some as a no-brainer, not all states are eager to gain a chunk of the grant money. The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office director, for instance, explained that the office is too short-staffed to apply for the grant. That means that Tulsa, which could have benefitted, won’t be able to take advantage of money that could be used for educational initiatives and increased enforcement campaigns. A family member of a pedestrian killed in an accident and a pedestrian and bicycle advisory committee member have each expressed disappointment at the move.
