Earlier this week, we reported about Tesla’s proclamation that it received the best ratings ever for a vehicle put through testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Their Model S vehicle purportedly received a 5.4 rating, which actually goes beyond the five stars awarded by the NHTSA. Now, the NHTSA has responded that they do not, in fact, hand out ratings higher than five stars, nor can one vehicle that receives five stars be ranked higher than another. One expert interviewed in a USA Today article notes that automakers aren’t supposed to make claims that go beyond what government data allows. Some have also questioned a claim that a machine designed to test roof strength broke before the vehicle’s roof did.
